we try really hard to make birthdays special for the honoree. our birthday traditions include door decorating, a special breakfast, and their choice of dinner and dessert.

how do/did you make birthdays special in your home?

summer fun and treat tuesday #3: 4th of july cake

we've been happily enjoying our summer. no school, nice weather, swimming, and delicious food. we LOVE eating!

i've been sort of bad at organizing crafts. i had one all lined up two weeks ago, but i was mad at the kids for being totally rotten in the store, so we didn't craft. then last week... well, i don't know what my excuse is. we were recovering from a fun 4th? i honestly don't remember last thursday!

i have been making treats though. so today i will post about that, even though it's not a tuesday (although i did make this treat on a tuesday!) i made this treat for america's and my mom's birthday. it's a festive 4th of july cake. i've been really making a strong effort to eat clean this summer, so this cake is (mostly) clean. it would be completely clean if i hadn't added the food dyes to it.

it was scrumptious.

i found the recipe at one of my favorite sites for clean eating recipes, the gracious pantry. seriously, this is my go-to site. this gal has taken tried and true food staples and transformed them into healthier, clean versions. i love it, because it takes all the guesswork out of trying to come up with your own clean version of a family favorite. and the best part--everything is yummy. i have yet to try a recipe i didn't like. so check out thegraciouspantry.com for some clean eating tips and recipe ideas, just like the 4th of july cake i made below (it's listed under canada day cake on her website).

Photobucket
between each layer there was whipped cream and fresh sliced strawberries

Photobucket
since i made the cake the day before, i used bamboo skewers to keep the layers from sliding. anyone remember my new year's cake fiasco?!

Photobucket
help is easy to come by when you are frosting a cake and need to clean the spatula

Photobucket
fresh strawberries and blueberries not only tasted great, but they helped make this cake look patriotic, too

Photobucket
the finished cake... the star deco was pinterest inspired, of course

Photobucket
guests enjoyed the surprise of the red, white, and blue layers... although taylor insisted they were red, yellow, and blue

visit the gracious pantry for this recipe and many more!

ben turned 5... 4 months ago!

well hello there! it's been a while, i know. i just finished up a super busy school year and am ready for SUMMER!! (it couldn't get here fast enough.) i'm so excited to be back and share the on-goings of the parker family, but first there is something i need to do. i actually typed this post, oh, 4 months ago... on ben's actual birthday. i needed to add pictures and well, i just got around to it. but i can't continue my blogging adventure without wishing my beanie a happy (even if it is extremely belated) birthday post!

*********************************************

5 years ago today i met a little spunkster named ben.

Photobucket

my labor with ben was the longest and hardest labor. he was being stubborn and didn't want to come out of the only home he'd ever known.

at 7 lbs 9 oz, he was my smallest baby and i recall marveling at how tiny his fingers and toes were.

Photobucket

the hospital was pretty crowded that day, so we began the discharge process just 12 hours after his birth. the nurses said i was an old pro, no need to keep me in the hospital. ha! we were in the comforts of our own home the night of ben's birth day. kinda cool, i think.

 Photobucket

ben was an easy going baby. he was a horrid napper unless he was snuggled up in someone's arms, but everything else was easy! i didn't leave the house for about 6 months after his birth, but that's another story!

 Photobucket

 Photobucket

at 5 years old ben is my cautious, but super enthusiastic kid. he has a lot of energy and a bit of a temper. i attribute that partly to him being the 3rd brother... sometimes he has to fight for what he wants or to be heard. it is something that has earned him a spot in the preschool "thinking chair" on more than one occasion. but he's learning from it!

ben is also very affectionate. he likes to cuddle and be near others. he loves to give hugs and kisses and he is very complimentary. rarely does a day go by that he doesn't say "i love you" out of the blue or tell me i look pretty. sweet ben.

  Photobucket

ben has been looking forward to his 5th birthday for a long time. we made a chain to count down the days. ben loved this and it helped curb the "is today my birthday? what about tomorrow? how about the next day?" questions.

happy birthday to my big 5 year old ben! i love you sooo much!

from the vlog archives

in july of 2008 joe took me on a surprise birthday trip. i had no idea where we were going or what we would be doing. he planned every little detail AND managed to keep it a secret! i don't think i could have done that.

when i was searching for a video of zachary to put on his belated birthday post i came across some vlogs (video logs) of our trip. i spent about 45 minutes watching them again and again. at one point i was laughing so hard joe came into our room from the living room and told me to quiet down--warning me that i was going to wake the kids up. ha!

pretty soon he was by my side laughing with me. and in case you are wondering, neither one of us woke the kids up.

i'm not sure you will enjoy these the same way we do, but i'm confident they are good for at least a little laugh.

so let's take a little vote. did i make it or not?

september 30th

Photobucket

on september 30, 2004 my sweet zachy bob was born at 2:23 pm, just 14 hours after my water started leaking and exactly one week before his official due date. i think anyone who has been nine months pregnant at the end of summer would agree--even after not sleeping all night this is like christmas!

Photobucket

we didn't know if zachary was going to be a boy or a girl. we thought it would be fun to be surprised.

Photobucket

and it was!

zachary was a sweetheart right from the start. newborn taylor cried all the time, so this was another pleasant surprise. zachary was such a model baby that my post partum nurse asked if she could borrow him as she trained a new nurse on some new baby procedures. i took laps around the nurses station, watching... listening... waiting for a peep from my newest son. but he was nothing short of cooperative and well mannered.

Photobucket

zachary grew to be a pretty easy going (although active!) toddler, as well. he had a love for all things wiggles, which lasted through kindergarten and part of the first grade. i guarantee that everyone who knew zachary during this phase of his life can picture him with his shirt tucked into his pants and talking about the "widdles!"

that should have been a video of zachy singing a wiggle song, but who can resist a magit pid?

Photobucket

Photobucket

seven year old zachary is not a die-hard wiggle fan anymore, but he's not quite ready to part with his wiggle treasures yet. he likes mario, pokemon, and anything taylor is interested in. he still sings and dances, but it's to the tune of katy perry or the black eyed peas.

and zachary is still sweet. he loves hugs and kisses and snuggles more than any of the other kids. he loves helping out with natalie, cooking, and helping in his teacher's classroom after school. he is also silly, athletic, sensitive, and can be short tempered (especially with brothers).

Photobucket

we love you, sweet zatary parter. we hope seven brings you more happiness than that tomato you thought was an apple!!

one decade

today's post has something to do with a baby. but not just any baby, my baby. my first baby.

he was born one decade ago on august 20, 2001.

Photobucket

there are so many details i remember about that first pregnancy. the nausea. hanging my head over the toilet, but never getting sick. wishing desperately that i would with the hope that i'd feel better. the countless OB appointments, just to make sure things were ok. the cravings--cheetos, black licorice, ice cream, strawberries, more cheetos. we nicknamed my bump "baby cheeto." i ate so many cheetos! i also ate a lot of strawberries, so many that i broke out in a rash one day. and yep, i went to the OB for that, too. the weight-gain. oh, the weight-gain! 85 pounds. that's the equivalent of a 5th grader, in case you were wondering.

Photobucket

i vividly remember the day we found out he was a boy. our little exam room was packed with family, eager to see an image of the first baby, grand-baby, great-grand-baby, niece/nephew. afterwards, we went out to celebrate finding out that it was a BOY... with food and a giant cake, of course. i remember pulling over and parking in the target parking lot to call someone and share my exciting news. i think of that moment every single time i drive by that target.

Photobucket

i walked a lot during the end of that pregnancy. long walks with my hubby, enjoying our last weeks together alone, secretly hoping to induce labor. the day we put the stroller together, we took it with us on our walk. we put a teddy bear where our soon-to-be baby would sit. ha ha!

Photobucket

on august 19th, the night before taylor was born, i recall sitting in the driveway and whining to the neighbors "this baby is never going to come out." a few hours later, while i was settling into bed, i felt a pop and found a quarter-sized wet spot on the sheet. i thought "this is it!!" i was so excited i couldn't sleep. i tried to read a book, but i was too excited to concentrate. i watched some tv, but not even that could distract me. nothing was happening and that frustrated me. so i got up and ran laps around the coffee table. i did jumping jacks, too. all the while timing contractions and checking for signs of ruptured membranes. nothing. i finally went to bed at 3 am. i got up with joe at 6 the next morning. "should i call the doctor or should i wait and see what happens?" the only reason i hesitated to call was because i had been there the week before thinking my water was leaking and they told me i would definitely know. but here i was and i didn't know anything! those weeks/days before your due date are so exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time.

Photobucket

i called L&D for some advice and the not-so-nice nurse on the other end of the line basically said to come in if i wanted to waste everyone's time. i decided to go back to bed and sleep to L&D and get checked out and then joe and i would go out for breakfast after they sent us home again. i was so hungry too, because i could hardly eat anything at night due to heartburn. my tummy grumbled the whole way to the hospital. we parked and walked leisurely into L&D. then we sat and waited. and waited and waited and waited. it was over an hour before someone talked with us and took us to a room. then we waited some more. another hour passed before a doctor came in to examine me. i was ready to just go and get my breakfast. hungry preggo = grouchy patient.

when the OB finally came in, i immediately apologized for wasting her time. i told her how i thought my water had been leaking in small amounts randomly for a week and that i was told i was just peeing myself. (loved that). i also told her i was very hungry and that we were going to go get breakfast after we left. this very nice OB didn't make me feel like i was wasting her time though or that i shouldn't have come in, which made me not so grouchy anymore (but still hungry). within 5 seconds of looking at me, she said "OH YEAH your water is leaking. go put this on while i get the nurses to start your paperwork. you are having a baby TODAY!"  the floodgates of emotion opened and the ball started rolling. mommyhood was right around the corner.

Photobucket

9 hours and 9 minutes later i was holding and pink, flat-eared, cone-headed, wailing bundle of joy. i was sooo happy and sooo hungry (never got that breakfast or anything else for that matter). i scarfed down something (??) and then snuggled my new baby. my first born son. the little boy who made me a mama.

Photobucket

it's been 10 years (and a few weeks) since that day. being his mama is an honor. it's not always easy. in fact, it's the hardest job i've ever had. but i love being a mom--i love being his mom.

happy (belated) birthday to my boy taylor!
