craft thursday #3: glitter fish

this craft is easy. easy is good when temps are in the triple digits.

i found the idea for glitter fish at deep space sparkle. i love this site because it breaks projects down by grade level and there are lots of samples of actual pieces done by kids. showing kids a sample that you've done can be discouraging for some. even if you don't think your own art is great, kids often observe the relative ease adults have in creating straight lines or in adding details. seeing kid friendly art done by other kids can be inspiring to them.

to make your own glitter fish you will need:

i think the author of this lesson used glitter watercolor, but i don't have that. i mixed some glitter glue in with tempera paint, because i didn't have just plain glitter either. i suppose you could add some water to the tempera to thin it out, but opted not to do that either. i may try it next time, as the tempera as-is made it difficult to see the lines drawn in oil pastel.

we started by looking at pictures of real fish and then pictures of whimsical fish someone had drawn. just like in the lesson, i told the kids our fish were going to have attributes of real fish (rounded bodies, fins, tails, mouths), but they could be as simple or as fancy as we wanted them to be.

the boys quickly got to drawing their fish using any color oil pastel they wanted

Photobucket
ben needed a little encouragement to draw his fish, he was worried it wouldn't be like his brothers'--that's what makes art so wonderful, ben!

Photobucket
time for paint--we only painted the fish, as we were going to cut them out after they dried

Photobucket
orange is taylor's favorite color, but surprise-surprise, he used red paint

Photobucket
the muffin pan worked great for holding paint--easy clean up, too!

Photobucket
fish #1 complete!

Photobucket
taylor and ben wanted to paint other things when they were done with their fish--no problem! zach painted two more fish, including a very fancy rainbow fish :)

the parkers' school of fish:

ben's is blue and zach's is red

Photobucket
taylor's is red and the other two are zach's

Soooo Beautiful and Colorful. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. Would it be possible for Ben to make something for Ramona??? She's making him a new lid for his jellybean jar. She would love to have anything that he makes.
